Spring 2019
For our final project of the design studio, we were split into teams to design a regional airport for an international city. My group was comprised of Nicole Bariuan as architect, myself as the structural engineer, and Troy Marasigan as the climate engineer. We have designed an airport for the city of Húsavík, in the north of Iceland. This group project challenged us to work as a team to create a unified concept, despite the different design considerations each of us brought to the project.
We value the preservation of the unique and ancient characteristics of Húsavík as a port town by seeking inspiration in the native architecture and not imposing an uncharacteristic aesthetic.
We seek to expand Húsavík’s prominence as a premiere site for whale watching by immediately grounding visitors with a sense of place upon arrival.
We will implement the Icelandic values of comfort to make traveling less stressful through optimized way-finding.
We strive to disrupt the pristine natural landscape as little as possible and respect Icelandic values of limiting environmental impacts through ecological design and responsible energy decisions.
We will design a space that unites the intimacy of a cottage with the grandeur of a ship.
